Sunday night’s (Aug 11) The Beast Coast show in Detroit was canceled after the police received two phone calls threatening a mass shooting incident at the venue.
The calls threatened an attack on the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre where the hip-hop collective, which includes Joey Bada$$, members of his Pro Era crew, The FaltbushZombies and The Underachievers, were due to perform.
Local police Sheriff Antony Wickersham explained:
“Obviously in today’s world and thing going on recently, we have to take each threat seriously. We were going to put additional deputies and undercover officers in and around the venue, and later this afternoon I found out the event was canceled.”
The Beast Coast’s promoters, 313 Presents, also released a statement, saying:
“Due to unforeseen circumstances tonight’s Beast Coast ‘Escape From New York Tour’ is canceled — tickets can be refunded at point of purchase — tickets purchased by phone or online will be automatically refunded.”
The decision to cancel came from the promoters, as police revealed:
“They were just provided with the information that was currently available. Again, these were two separate threats that came in and both were being investigated.”
Of course, if the threats were deemed to be real, it is not worth putting people’s lives at risk, so we can understand why the decision to cancel the show was made – even if we can’t understand why someone would want to make such threats in the first place!
